1. OVERVIEW

♦ Australia (English name: Australia), officially the Commonwealth of Australia, is a country comprising the Australian continent, the island of Tasmania, and many small islands.
♦ This is the 6th largest country in the world by area with a total area of 7,617,930 square kilometers after Russia, Canada, China, the United States, and Brazil.
♦ Capital: Canberra.
♦ Largest city: Sydney
♦ Language: English
♦ Australia is a member of the United Nations, the G20, the Commonwealth of Nations, ANZUS, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), the World Trade Organization, the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Forum, and the Pacific Islands Forum.
2. STATES AND TERRITORIES
♦ Australia has six states and two main territories on the mainland. There are also several other territories under the federal government.
♦ The six states are: New South Wales (NSW), Queensland (QLD), South Australia (South Australia), Tasmania, Victoria (VIC) and Western Australia (Western Australia).
♦ The two main territories are the Northern Territory and the Australian Capital Territory (ACT).
♦ In most respects, the territories function like states, but the federal parliament can override states in breach of section 51 of the Constitution. State parliaments have legislative powers over areas including schools, state police, state courts, roads, public transport and local government, which are not listed in section 51.

3. GEOGRAPHY AND CLIMATE
♦ Located on the Indo-Australian Plate, surrounded by the Indian and Pacific Oceans, separated from Asia by the Arafura and Timor Seas, the Coral Sea off the coast of Queensland, and the Tasman Sea between Australia and New Zealand. Australia is the world's smallest continent but the sixth largest country by total area. Due to its size and isolation, Australia is also known as an "island continent", and is sometimes considered the world's largest island.
♦ The Great Barrier Reef is the world's largest coral reef. Mount Augustus in Western Australia is the world's largest monolith. At 2,228 metres (7,310 ft), Mount Kosciuszko in the Great Dividing Range is the highest mountain on mainland Australia, …
♦ Due to the vastness and length of Australia, it has a diverse landscape, including tropical rainforests in the north-east, mountain ranges in the south-east, south-west and east, and arid deserts in the centre. Australia's climate is significantly influenced by ocean currents, which are associated with periodic droughts, and seasonal tropical low-pressure systems that generate cyclones in northern Australia. These factors cause rainfall to vary markedly from year to year. Much of the northern part of the country has a tropical climate, with a predominantly summer-rainy (monsoon) season. The southwestern corner of the country has a Mediterranean climate. Most of the southeastern part (including Tasmania) has a temperate climate.
4. EDUCATION
♦ The education program in Australia follows international teaching standards, focusing on developing personal potential, practicing communication, artistic talent and effective working skills in an international environment. Providing more than 1,100 educational institutions and 22,000 courses.
