Huỳnh Hoa Thủy Tiên, a graduate of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities in Ho Chi Minh City, received a student exchange scholarship to South Korea during her second year. She highlights the importance of academic excellence, strong language skills, and active participation in extracurricular activities. “Beyond learning, engage in extracurriculars to build life skills and foster good relationships with school departments and organizations. This leaves a lasting impression on professors and positions you as a top candidate for opportunities,” Tiên advises.
Similarly, Nguyễn Diễm Lê from Foreign Trade University (Hanoi), recipient of prestigious scholarships like the Global Undergraduate Exchange Program (sponsored by the U.S. Department of State) and Saxion Talent Scholarship (STS) from Saxion University (Netherlands), suggests students refine their search skills. “Searching ‘Scholarships for international students’ yields thousands of results. Narrowing down suitable scholarships that align with your abilities is essential. Avoid applying for all available scholarships and instead focus on those that fit your profile,” Diễm Lê recommends.
Crafting a Unique Application
Ngọc Anh highlights the importance of meticulous preparation. “From preparing documents to departure, the process often takes two years. This timeframe includes obtaining necessary certifications like TOEFL, GRE, and academic records. Most universities accept international students in September, so submitting applications by December or January of the previous year is crucial,” Ngọc Anh explains.
Lê Bình Huy, a full-scholarship recipient from the University of Nottingham (UK), stresses the importance of showcasing personal uniqueness. “Highlight your distinct qualities, whether it's playing instruments, performing arts, or other talents. Including videos or supplementary materials can distinguish your application. Admissions committees often value unique skills over grades,” Huy shares.
Trần Bá Quốc, who received a full PhD scholarship in environmental engineering from Naresuan University (Thailand), outlines the typical scholarship application components:
“Crafting essays and proposals requires time and continuous refinement. Strong essays and well-developed proposals stand out the most,” Quốc adds.
Showcase Academic and Extracurricular Excellence
Hoàng Thị Minh Trang, who secured multiple scholarships in Australia and the UK, underscores the importance of demonstrating academic excellence, experience, and extracurricular involvement. “Highlight your passion for the chosen field, show thorough research about the program, and express your determination to excel,” Trang advises.
Nguyễn Minh Thành, a student in Norway, stresses the significance of writing personal, plagiarism-free essays. “Select meaningful topics, write clearly and concisely within the word limit, and avoid grammatical errors. Essays should reflect why you chose the scholarship, the program’s benefits, and how you plan to contribute to your community and country,” Thành explains.
Interview Preparation
Bình Huy suggests staying calm and engaging during interviews. “Confidence and comfort make the interviewer more receptive. Prolong the conversation naturally to maintain their interest,” he advises.
