According to Hà Ngọc Anh, a former student at Monash University (Australia), it is important to assess your own abilities in line with the scholarship criteria to find a scholarship that suits you.
Huỳnh Hoa Thủy Tiên, a graduate of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, HCMC, received a student exchange scholarship to South Korea in her second year of university. She shares that besides focusing on excelling academically and improving language skills, students should also pay attention to extracurricular activities. Engaging in such activities not only builds life skills but also helps expand connections with various departments and organizations at school, leaving a positive impression on professors.
Similarly, Nguyễn Diễm Lê, a student at the Foreign Trade University (Hanoi), who has received prestigious scholarships like the Global Undergraduate Exchange Program (sponsored by the U.S. Department of State) and the Saxion Talent Scholarship (STS) from Saxion University, advises students to select scholarships wisely. With thousands of results available when searching for "Scholarships for international students" on Google, it is crucial to choose the scholarships that match your qualifications.
Ngọc Anh stresses that preparing and submitting your application is crucial, as it reflects your hard work. "From preparing your application to leaving for your studies typically takes two years, as you need time for exams like TOEFL, GRE, and your major-specific tests. U.S. universities generally accept international students in September, so applications are typically due by December or January of the previous year, making it ideal to start preparing in September of the previous year," Ngọc Anh advises.
Lê Bình Huy, a former student who received a full scholarship to the University of Nottingham (UK), emphasizes the importance of showcasing what makes you unique. "Don’t hesitate to show your special talents, whether it's playing musical instruments or singing. Sometimes, the admissions officers might not be impressed by your grades, but they may welcome you because of your unique skills that others don’t have," he says.
Trần Bá Quốc, who received a full PhD scholarship in environmental engineering at Naresuan University in Thailand, shares that each scholarship has different requirements, but common elements include personal information, academic experience, essays, recommendation letters, certificates, and transcripts. For a PhD scholarship, research topics must also be included. "This part and the essay will take a lot of time to write, as they require continuous updates and revisions," Quốc adds.
Hoàng Thị Minh Trang, who received multiple scholarships to study in Australia and the UK, says, "Most international universities value criteria such as excellent academic results at the undergraduate level, experience, extracurricular activities, and goals for the course. Therefore, when applying, make sure to emphasize that you've thoroughly researched your desired field, that you have the skills to succeed, and most importantly, that you are committed to being the best student."
Nguyễn Minh Thành, a student in Norway, shares how to craft an impressive essay: "Choose a meaningful topic and write the essay in your own words. Don’t plagiarize. Ensure your essay doesn't exceed the word limit, check for spelling mistakes, and keep the language clear, concise, and easy to understand. The essay should address the program you're applying for, why you're choosing this scholarship, how it will benefit you, your country, and the international community, and your qualities that will help you complete the course and apply what you learn."
Bình Huy also advises that during scholarship interviews, maintaining a relaxed attitude and being able to engage in conversation naturally are key to impressing the interviewers.
