Opportunities to Obtain Alternative Work Permits in Canada

IRCC Announcement

As of January 27, 2021, foreign nationals residing in Canada with a post-graduation work permit (PGWP) that has expired or is nearing expiration due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic will have a one-time opportunity to apply for a new work permit.

This new permit will be valid for up to 18 months, allowing international students to continue working or seeking employment in Canada. The application deadline is July 27, 2021.

Eligibility Criteria to Reapply for a Work Permit

To be eligible, applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • PGWP Expiry: PGWP must have expired on or after January 30, 2021, or be within 4 months of expiry from the application start date.
  • Residency: The applicant must be residing in Canada.
  • Legal Status: Must have valid temporary resident status or have submitted an application to restore valid status.
