The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has recently announced plans to amend certain regulations related to F-1 (U.S. student visa) and H-1B (non-immigrant work visa) categories with the aim of attracting skilled labor from abroad.
According to the DHS website, F-1 visa holders will be allowed to intern for up to 17 months in the U.S., up from the current 12 months, with priority given to fields such as science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. DHS is also considering allowing the spouses of F-1 visa holders to enroll in part-time study at the same institution.
For H-1B visa holders, the most notable proposal is to grant legal work authorization to spouses of H-1B visa holders (specialists in fields such as architecture, engineering, mathematics, etc.). It is currently unclear when these changes will take effect.
