Vietnamese Students Contribute $881 Million to the U.S. Economy

According to data from the annual Open Doors report by the Institute of International Education (IIE), the number of Vietnamese students studying in the U.S. during the 2017-2018 academic year reached 24,325, an increase of 1,887 students compared to the previous year. This marks an 8.4% growth in one year, contributing $881 million to the U.S. economy, according to information from the U.S. Embassy.

Of the total 24,325 Vietnamese students in the U.S.:

  • 69.6% are pursuing undergraduate degrees
  • 15.2% are in graduate programs
  • 8.6% are participating in Optional Practical Training (OPT)
  • 6.6% are enrolled in non-degree programs

Engineering, Business and Management, Mathematics, and Computer Science continue to be the most popular fields for international students in the 2017-2018 academic year.

Mathematics and Computer Science saw the fastest growth, with an 11.3% increase compared to 2016-2017, followed by Law and Law Enforcement programs, which grew by 10.4% over the same period.
