Steps to Apply for a U.S. Student Visa (F-1/J-1):

Step 1:

  • After obtaining a passport, applicants must pay the non-refundable visa application fee at Citibank to schedule an interview appointment.

Step 2:

  • Complete the visa application forms. Use the online electronic form to save time on the interview day.

Step 3:

  • Prepare a 5x5 cm passport photo for the visa application.

Step 4:

  • Collect the required supporting documents to submit with the visa application:

(a) Proof of SEVIS ID, indicated on the school or program’s admission document:

  • For F-1 visa (student visa): Form I-20 issued by a U.S. school.
  • For J-1 visa (exchange program): Form DS-2019 from the exchange program.

(b) Proof of SEVIS fee payment:

  • F-1 and J-1 applicants with an I-20 or DS-2019 issued on or after September 1, 2004, must pay the SEVIS fee before the interview.
  • Submit the original SEVIS fee receipt (Form I-797) or electronic receipt if paid online.

(c) Financial proof (e.g., bank statements, income documents, business licenses, tax records, employment contracts) to show that the student, family, or sponsor can cover tuition, living expenses, and other costs throughout the study period in the U.S.

(d) Academic transcripts and diplomas from previous studies.

(e) Test scores (e.g., TOEFL, SAT) as required by the school.

(f) Evidence proving that the applicant intends to leave the U.S. after completing their studies.

(g) For accompanying spouse/children, submit proof of relationship (e.g., marriage certificates, birth certificates).

Step 5:

  • On the scheduled interview date and time, visit the U.S. Consulate General to submit the visa application and attend the interview.
  • Applications will not be accepted after 10:30 AM on the interview day.
  • No electronic devices, including mobile phones, are allowed inside the consulate.
  • If approved, the visa will be issued at 3:00 PM on the next business day.
