The Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) allows international students who have graduated from a Canadian educational institution to work legally for up to 3 years, depending on the duration of the program and courses they completed in Canada. This permit is issued to international students who have completed a full-time course for at least 8 months to meet the eligibility criteria when applying for the permit. Students must have graduated from:

  • Public institutions: colleges, universities, trade and technology training schools, CEGEP (Technical colleges and publicly funded universities in Quebec’s education system).
  • Private colleges and universities that operate based on public school regulations.
  • Private high schools or colleges (in Quebec) that provide qualifying programs of 900 hours or more, awarding Diplôme D’études Professionnelles (DEP) or Attestation De Spécialisation professionnelle (ASP) after graduation.
  • Private institutions in Canada authorized to grant diplomas according to provincial law, exclusively for programs recognized by the provincial government.

Eligibility for the Post-Graduation Work Permit:

  • Maintain full-time student status in Canada during each semester of the program.

Important Notes:

  • Transcripts and the official letter must be included in the application for the work permit.
  • The application for PGWP must be submitted within 180 days of receiving the official graduation confirmation from the school.
  • The Study Permit should still be valid when applying for the PGWP (currently, a valid Study Permit is not mandatory for PGWP applications).
  • International students can only receive one Post-Graduation Work Permit from IRCC.

  • The length of the work permit depends on the duration of your study program:
    • Less than 8 months: Not eligible for PGWP.
    • Between 8 months and 2 years: PGWP issued will be for a duration not exceeding the length of the study program.
    • 2 years or more: PGWP issued may be for up to 3 years.
